Default Mt Te Aroha Mast being removed?

    Hi All,

My father noted to me yesterday he has heard some talk from some of the folks in Te Aroha that the mast on top of Mt Te Aroha is to be demolished and digital transmission to come from a new site at the bottom of the mountain.

I don't personally believe it as the height of that site is needed to cover a fair wack of the Waikato, but has anyone heard anything to this effect?

    Thanks

That sounds very doubtfull being one of the main transmission sites. Surely it would effect dozens of services, Not just tv, radio, etc.?

More likely to be Putauaki rather than Te Aroha

I think Classic Hits is the only station on Mt Te Aroha, most of the Waikato stations come from Ruru Hill so they don't spill into the Bay of Plenty

Te Aroha is a major link in several microwave networks
plus removing DVBT from there would remove the feed to infills such as taupo
and imagine the outcry from the whole district if they had HD then in the future they did not !!
No it would be a real stupid idea to decomission it
What is more likely is the Band 1 antenna being removed and possibly the tower shortened slightly !!

be pretty stupid to knock over an existing hilltop mast then re erect another at a worse location

In a lot of cases land was acquired in the early days for TV transmission . Some places it could come back to haunt them if there is no TV anymore .
I did hear that the Putauaki tower in the Kawerau area was having its band 3 antennas removed and the top part of the tower dismantled !!

More a general question, with other big transmission masts around the country what would they likely do with all that spare space on transmission masts once all the Analogue VHF/UHF gear is taken down? install mobile phone transmitters?

Stick 3.5 GHZ wimax on them for "rural" broadband
