View Full Version : Any of the PVR support surround sound via HDMI?

Saw there were lots of problems in the UK due to many receivers not allowing sound over the optical connection when using HDMI.

My receiver (Sony STR-DA2400ES) is one of those, and without getting a firmware patch (by a service centre) I'll need a Freeview HD PVR that supports multi-channel PCM (more than stereo) or bitstreaming over HDMI.

I've noticed allot of the current gen only support 2 channel PCM and no bitstreaming over HDMI. Are there any that do?

Cheers.

I've got my Zinwell 640PVR connected to a Denon 3808 by both HDMI and Coax. I've set the Denon to ignore audio over the HDMI connection as we want dolby digital for TV3 over the coax to decode properly, rather than just having PCM and therefore Dolby ProLogic II (from the Denon). However, the 640 does allow you to chose either Dolby or PCM output via the SPDIF output, so I would assume that this would include the optical output as well. Signal level from TV3 over the SPDIF (that is Dolby Digital) is quite a bit lower than the standard signal over HDMI.
