Hi there. I saw the post on the mythtv mailing list and I'm here.

About myself..
I work at Orcon Internet as Senior systems Administrator looking after alot of the systems which run Orcon (mail, dns, hosting, etc etc) and have worked and owned a number of other ISP's in the past.

I live in West Auckland, and have a Nova-S Plus (DVB-S) and HVR4000 Card (DVB-S, DVB-T, Analog and DVB-S2) running under Linux (and windows when needed). I have just a standard Sky Antenna at the moment but upgrading to Mover or Multi Antennas next year.

I've done a little work on the HVR4000 under linux and works well and have DVB-T working (but unable to test it yet in Auckland) (Analog TV works on it as well). I have done a little bit of work on other capture cards in the past as well which are included in the Linux Kernel.

Alright I'll carry this on!

I am a computer amateur, but quite experienced with linux with a particular interest in multimedia.

I run a MythTV system at home in Lyttelton with 2 Skystar II DVB-S cards, working EPG and running Knoppmyth. It also has a rather unsuccessful remote front end which doesn't have enough horsepower to work properly. An upgrade should fix that but the better half thinks we have enough computers (she may be right)!

Unlike Lennon I am unlikely to get code accepted into the kernel, but I do like to assist the open source world on forums, and by reporting bugs.

I am admin/founder of the mythtvnz mailing list (http://lists.ourshack.com/mailman/listinfo/mythtvnz). Please join up if you are interested in an open source PVR solution.

Theres nothing to receive other than test signals at this point. However several people on the mythtvnz mailing list have picked up the tests. Watching them on linux is another matter, but Steve from openmedia is in discussion with the mplayer people about changes that might need to be made to mplayer.

Steve from openmedia has posted somewhere on here (http://www.dtvforum.co.nz/forum/showthread.php?p=260#post260) that he has a Freecom USB DVB-T card that works.

I'm playing with a couple of USB Units at the moment. I have a freecom unit I got in the UK that worked with the older MPEG2 DVB-T tests, and should work fine when the real broadcasts start in Auckland.

I also have a Hauppauge HVR-900 USB stick that I use on the road as it has both analogue and digital tuners. Been playing with the AU MPEG-2 HD signals on it this week.

If anyone has a spare stick the DOES work I wouldn't mind a loan so I can do some test in Nelson.

I think we are getting off the topic, which i thought was turning into an "intro" thread.

Never mind!

Ok then back to the topic.
I'm an Electrician and a hobbie Sat TV freak I have 4 Ku band dishes 2 C band dishes the neighbors all think I'm from outer space and I have a T90 that is a bitch to set up. I am always on the hunt for more Free To Air, I have 2 pay TV card services and wish I could get NZ free to air channels because although NZ gets Aust channels the NZ foot print is unattainable in Aust.

MrElectricity, couldn't agree more, there is a need for change, nz channels in aus, aus channels in nz, our two countries share so much in common, yet each are restricting free to air broadcasts..think of the advertising dollar that could be made for the networks between our two countries with the viewer numbers multipling tenfold.

Absolutely sky satt but of cause the bureaucrats would stuff it all up.

Well most TV programmes are sold to NZ companies with the rights to only show them in NZ. An NZ TV company won't generally have the rights to show stuff in Oz and vice versa.

For change to happen, thinking out of the square is needed, the boarder of rights can easily be a thing of the past, think of it as an open freeview platform, the borders that our aus brothers have to watch what it commonly there own free to air channels is being hampered as MrElectricity said with current bureaucracy things need to change, a change is needed for progression.

Its got nothing to do with bureaucracy and everything to do with copyright laws and the desire of media companies to maximise their profits:

* the desire of the TV producers to sell separately into two separate territorial markets; and
* the desire of the NZ/Oz TV broadcasters to maximise their profits once they have paid for the exclusive rights in their territory.

So nothing to do with bureaucracy, everything to do with corporate motives.

-drags things back on topic-

'lo there. I came skulking over here from Geekzone to have a looksie after seeing a post or two from Mr Openmedia. I currently work at the Uni of Canty managing a few thousand systems. Am a Windows person (don't hold it against me) but can use Linux capably. Currently have a custom HTPC box (Silverstone case, Intel/Ati innards) running XP and Media Portal, with a MCE remote set. My FTA analogue feed is grabbed from the Telstra Cable network, and really can't wait for some DTT goodness. I guess I will drag all the advice I need out of you lot closer to the time Sugarloaf starts spitting something out. Nice to meet you all, and nice to be here.

I thought Sugarloaf is active already? in fact it was the first to switch on.

At this stage we don't have enough eyes looking since its pretty much restricted to those with PC tuner gear.
