Are these any good? I notice that freeviewshop have a new Topfield TF5050 for $259.
I ask because I have a mate who whats HD tv and has an old sky dish but no uhf aerial. If they're any good it may be an option and he can save on having to install an aerial.

personally and this is only my opinion they are not worth the extra money.
the upscale engine tv 1 tv2 & tv3 have does a much better job than the ones installed in stb's. i have a philips hd recorder with upscaleing and the upscaled dtt picture is far sharper than the mpeg 2 satellite image upscaled by my philips pvr. there is also another factor and that is content ie csi miami looks good in any format but an upscaled image from tv2's blue water high looks like crapp. city homecide is supposed to be hd but its hard to pick, i really couldnt notice much diference in tv3's Et.

I have a Satellite receiver with Upscale via the HDMI interface .
After a lot of testing I prefer to leave it in the native setting ,
NTSC 480i mode from the NASA channel on Intelsat 701 is disgusting if upscaled to 1080i . As is other NTSC satellite material
So I would say unless you are short of standard inputs on the TV then prob not worth it. But if you want to future proof your satellite system then a HD / SD sat box could be worth looking at .
I have the Topfield TF7710HSCI which also upscales SD .
The same will apply to DVD Players with HDMI there are obv some quality issues with consumer grade units when set to upscale mode .

An upscaled SD picture will never be as good as HD, if your in an HD area spend the bucks , you wont regret it

I agree. It would be worth the trouble of installing a UHF aerial. The FreeviewHD picture is amazing when the content is in HD.

And an UHF aerial may cost you only 15 bucks.
