HD brighter than SD?

The other day, badminton was simulcast on both TV One and Sport Extra. I noticed that the picture on TV One is brighter than the one on SE.

Do they deliberately increase the brightness on the HD channels to make them look better or is it just an optical illusion?

On my set the Bright is very similar but perhaps TV1 has a bit more contrast also a huge difference in Definition on TV1 HD but the video quallity of SE SD is pretty bad from the games anyway
