Well, my grandparents just had the new MySky HDi box put in, and I can't believe how poor the setup was/ how pathetic the box seems to be.

okay, I have quite a few complaints, so I'm going to group them into setup and the box itself.

Setup

The HDMI cable was one from the DVD player, which I had moved to Component so the HDMI port was free until I got an HDMI switch. I would've expected Sky to include it's own, so I'm going to ring them up and get one sent out so I don't have to buy a replacement.
The widescreen settings were all wrong, the guy didn't even match the settings to the old MySky, which seems really slack
The HD setting was on auto, which seemed to make the GUI stay in SD, more on this in the section about the machine.
The old MySky box was moved to the other room, which just has an old CRT, and they didn't set it to 4:3, so EVERY program had people too skinny, and black bars on the sides of 4:3 shows.

Okay, now for my complaints about the machine itself.

The GUI - it's awful, the text looks like it's stuck in 576i, even though I forced the output to 1080i. How hard can it be to have text that is smoothed, or even make it use the available pixels.
The remote, this is actually something that peeved me about the old MySky as well, but the remote has the most useless IR LED in it, it's like the remotes off the $50 DVD players that you get in supermarkets.

Does anyone else have similar problems with the installation of Sky stuff, or complaints about the box?
I wish Sky could at least give a better service seeing as people pay heaps for the service and it bugs me how every time I go to someone why sky's house I comment on something not looking right and they say 'oh, I asked the installer about that and he said it couldn't be fixed' and then I fix it in <30seconds and they are amazed.

you could try e-mailing the head oriface and see if that helps but i think that as thay seem to think that youdont have a choice of provider that thay can provide crap service and get away with it

I also heard the SD quality via HDMI was dreadful and that a standard AV or component leads had to be run to get anything like a decent pix on SD .
Sounds like one very stuffed up box !!

Sky installers have never changed the screen ratio even with the legacy boxes and I dont blame them they get paid peanuts,

Quote from the original question: "Does anyone else have similar problems with the installation of Sky stuff, or complaints about the box?"

Interesting: I have a totally different experience. I was a bit doubtfull whether I would keep the box or not, but it was an interesting trial offer, so I went for it. Now, after 4 months I don't want to be without it.

The guy that set it up was experienced, left a good HDMI cable and set everything up right. The GUI looks good, no problems (on a Panasonic 42" 1080i/p). The HD is nice, but not nice enough to justify the extra money. The recording bit though is brilliant. Activate the EPG and press the R for record. .

One thing though: no RF modulator, so no viewing in the bedroom (this is solved now by adding a separate modulator).

At this point I'm happy to continue my subscription and pay more for the PVR fuction by itself.
