Changes are brewing at C4, with a raft of new non-music shows appearing on the schedule.

The TV3 sister channel has also announced a move on the Sky Digital platform, switching from channel 64 - between other music stations, MTV, Juice and Alt TV - down to channel 12 among entertainment channels, E! and Fashion TV.

The announcement said the new position "reflects C4's move towards being a complete entertainment channel".

Some of the channel newcomers include American drama Friday Night Lights, sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica, and the former TV3 sitcom 30 Rock.

British drama Skins and the US version of The Office also return to the channel with new seasons.

In past months the station has started programming movies on Sunday nights.

Station manager Andrew Szusterman declined to return our calls asking what was happening at the network, but a new season launch next week is likely to unveil more.

It seems the channel - originally set up in 1997 by TV3 as youth-skewed entertainment channel TV4, which ran at a loss before being reinvented as the cheaper music-oriented C4 format in 2003 - may be returning to its roots.

The change comes at a time when the audience for music videos is increasingly watching them on the net or downloading to portable media players.

Whatever the plans, it certainly seems the network is turning down the volume on its music content, if not changing the record altogether.

Well given most of C4's content isn't in widescreen, HD might be considered a bit of a waste.

I seem to remember reading in the past day or two that it's dropping it's "music channel" status and going mainstream.

From the NZ Herald site. No direct link had to search..
