Kordia hopes it can turn the expertise it gained building the $30 million transmission network for Freeview HD into an export opportunity.

Chief executive Geoff Hunt says the free-to-air digital terrestrial television service, which has been live since April 2, is one of only four in the world to broadcast programmes in the MP4 format.

Kordia strongly argued for the use of MP4 technology, which means Freeview can broadcast more TV channels using less radio spectrum, he says, and its engineering team succeeded in overcoming unexpected challenges getting the technology to work.

The state-owned enterprise is now providing consulting services for an upgrade of Britain's free-to-air digital TV network, also called Freeview, and is doing some preparatory work in Malaysia, assisting with spectrum planning.

"We have five engineers in Britain on long term contracts and we are bringing a certain amount of work back here.

"Asia is typically quite a long way behind New Zealand at this stage. Our engineering business has now got real experience to offer customers who are just getting underway".

At an event to mark the launch of Freeview HD last week, Prime Minister Helen Clark said New Zealand had "leapfrogged to the front of the pack".

Freeview estimates 100,000 households have set-top boxes capable of receiving either its satellite service or Freeview HD.

Miss Clark said that take-up was fast. "Our research has shown there will be substantial economic gains if we can make a swift transition now to digital TV, and significant costs if we don't complete the transition by switching analogue off."
