New Zealand's first high definition television provider went live this week, but not for those in the Nelson and Tasman regions.

The Freeview HD service is available through the newly established digital terrestrial network, which is beamed to viewers with a HD-capable television who have a Freeview set-top box and UHF antenna.

Unlike the Freeview satellite service which is available to anyone who has installed a satellite receiver and set-top box, only people who live in regions where transmitters have been installed will receive the new service.

Freeview general manager Steve Browning said the Nelson and Tasman regions missed out on Freeview HD as its population was not large enough to justify the cost of installing a transmission site here.

"Freeview HD has been rolled out to 75 percent of the national population which equates to the nine largest urban centres.

"This is due to the cost of taking the transmission network further than the 18 transmission sites currently built."

Mr Browning said it was unlikely Nelson would receive high definition service from Freeview in the near future.

"There are no current plans to extend Freeview HD," he said.
