The video quality I have seen on many of the channels is quite poor
compared to what we see on Freeview. As for program content I couldn't possibly comment !! :D:D

No, the progamme content is not all garbage! Lots of good stuff on Sky.
The problem is that their business model has us compulsorily having to pay for garbage rather than just select the channels we want and pay for them and them alone.
That's why I won't subscribe to Sky.

That is how pay tv work you must take the good along with the bad.

So, when I go to the supermarket I've got to buy three rotten onions before I can buy a good one?
Come on, it's not "that's how pay tv works" - it's simply monopoly power

Just like until very recently with local loop unbundle you must have a phone connection to have ADSL

One reason (among others) why I flatly refuse to join sky is that they strip teletext subtitles for the deaf out of their TV3 feed. TV3 on Analogue and Freeview carries teletext -- but not SKY. I'm deaf so any service that doesn't provide subtitles is worthless to me.
Fourtently TV1 and TV2 on SKY does carry teletext since the decoder gets the feed directly from TVNZ's transposer -- as opposed to SKY's transposer. The TV3 feed is apparently encoded by SKY on the ground and then fed to the SKY transposer. So SKY customers effectively get a second-hand version of TV3.
And don't get me started on the pix quality. Watching the recent rugby world cup on TV3 via SKY was dreadful. Switched to VHF (at the time I was in a friend's house behind One Tree Hill with very poor VHF coverage) and it looked much, much better!
Shocking that SKY has compressed their digital signals so much it's actually worse than a poor analogue signal! And whats even more shocking is how much people actually pay for the service! What a rip off.

James

Amazing that sky strip the text from TV3 rendering it almost usless to any one who relies on text so they can enjoy a programme , one up to Freeview i guess.

It all depends on what you watch and how much of it, I guess... The idea of paying never-ending monthly fees for advert-infested content doesn't appeal to me personally though!

Before I had a mortgage I lived in a huge flat with a central room ideal for home theatre. I set this up with a CRT projector, Surround sound and sky distributed via RF to all that wanted it. We had allot of good times
Watching Videos from the rental store.....!

It is bad enough Sky that removes TV3's sub-titles, but some programmes on the 'The History Channel' have the 'CC' symbol (for Foxtel) but no subtitles are transmitted by Sky. Most of the movies they show will have sub-titles plus the UK-TV programmes yet Sky have never bothered to turn on their sub-title option. No money in it, I suppose.
