Well this ones not Chinese junk, It's got a European name and comes from HK! :p

(not to be confused with the olive oil)

I wonder when we get to see the PVR version. (or any version)

I saw the Zinwell in action last year. It was pretty much what you would expect. The simulation may have had a lowish bitrate file running as it was really difficult to tell the HD-HDMI output from the SD output. We got them running side by side at one point.

I think those in the industry call this SBD (slightly better definition)

BTW. where did this $545 figure come from?

Have a look at the 'other' model, also 620,and maybe you'll realise it's not european :o)

I was being "ironic"

Looking at the following PDF I see that turning the OLIVIA 620 into a recording device is just a firmware upgrade.

http://www.schot.com/eng/download/ZMT620FTA%20UPGRADE%201%202%202%20USER%20GUIDE%20_ 3__fin_3.0.pdf

Note the USB connector in the back right hand side.

As i cannot read Chinese I am guessing the HK $1,990 mentioned on schot is for this box.
That works out to about NZ $ 320.00

One thing about the Zinwell is the Network port at the back. That might open up some interesting options IPTV etc.

How about a 64 gig usb flash disk to use as a mini pvr? or plugging in a multimedia keyboard. The box might offer more future features than people realize.

Looks like the box has good firmware support.

BTW. where did this $545 figure come from?

Most likely from the Noel Leemings flyer the other week and one $599 model that has been listed on the Dick Smith site for the past week

Following on from my ideas about the use of the USB and network ports.

How many of you download tvshows? quite a few I bet. Imagine copying a few H264 720p encoded shows to a usb stick. Then putting them into the Zinwell for playback.

What lack of HDTV content was that TVNZ??? and maybe some of these shows might be available from TVNZ on demand? hmm

I think this box will have a few tricks up its sleve in terms of what it can do.

I do that now with my Popcornhour box but a Hidef STB that will do the same thing does definatly have an appeal as long as it has the codecs etc.. MKV these days is a must..

hmm 64 gig USB stick anyone ? hmm how many blueray rips could that hold. Even the Strong I looked at, which is a bog standard FTA satellite box had usb and could play photos and mp3 files.

How about a mheg5 web browser that takes u straight to TVNZ on demand.. Nah they wouldn't be thinking of that would they..:rolleyes:

I had a look around earlier and found a box retailing at $290 NZ that has everything including mheg5 and usb and the network port.

.

the manual claims that the network port and usb can only be used for software updates... Can anyone confirm this.

At this stage, yes. The NZ firmware doesn't use the Ethernet/USB for anything.

A Hong Kong firmware has been found to partially work, and recording to a USB HDD is possible - but too buggy at this stage to be useful in NZ.

I believe that DSE have now updated their promotional material and simply removed Ethernet & USB from their bullet point feature list - possibly because people got it home and found they couldn't do anything with them.

Also, I believe that most firmware updates will occur over-the-air (OTA), so Ethernet/USB will probably see very little use in NZ.
