Audiences in the UK and France are moving to multichannel viewing faster than the rest of Western Europe, figures suggest.

The five UK analogue channels saw viewers drop by 3.2% from 2006 to 2007 while digital television penetration grew to more than 85%, according to the e-Media Institute, based in Milan.

France's national analogue channels dropped 3.7%, from 82.8% to 79.1%, in the period.

The trend was slower in Italy and Spain. The seven Italian terrestrials dropped 1.7% and in Spain it was a 1.1% fall.

The body said digital terrestrial television was the second biggest platform across Europe, with 25m households, trailing 37m satellite cut compared to 13m cable and 4m IPTV. It thinks there could be more than 8m IPTV users by 2010, however.
