Great pic there of Te Aroha. Just wondering, are there going to be any DTV services off the TV3/C4 site at Ruru? Whilst I'm on the topic of Ruru, is there any reason why TV3 broadcasts on CH9 and CH10 rather than just one channel?

Ruru I dont think so . That site is JDA not Kordia .
Ruru uses one channel for north coverage and another channel for south
coverage . Its to reduce interference to others areas on the same channel

Horrible thought; what if canwest want their gear at 1 site & tvnz / kordia at another. there have been some real abortions of coverage since tv3/4 appeared, notably in the waikato, nelson regions. hopefully dvb-t will be more orderly. with ruru it was 9v,when tv 4 came on was altered to 10v north [as auckland on 9h tv4]and 9v southwards with 7v west to hamilton.10v ruru and 10v kopukairua [tauranga] still argue if you live in certain places like here with 11v whariti and 11v mt threave,no dominant signal, whariti is slightly better, but mt threave is still a damn nuisance. only got a clear 4 when freeview started.

I think DVB T the idea is all the services are from one site. Not like the screwup here where Tv3 and Prime is on one hill and Sky and Tvnz is on another . hopefully some decent planning !! But in our case the tv3 / Prime
site has much better coverage to the north so dvbt wont have the infill in the Otaki / Te Horo area :confused:

Ahhhh.. DVT.. Let it begin.
I'm interested in Analogue Power Vs Terrestrial Power when it comes to coverage.
Te Aroha must be one of the best sites Nationally with one of the widest coverage areas. Channel allocation both on VH and UHF are good.
Cant argue there.
Id say its just all those little Tx's dropped in willy Nilly along the line that stuff certain areas up.
As stated earlier - Just Plain bad planning.

On another Note, Has anyone seen a Good FM plan for a while ?.
I dont think such a procedure even exists.
FM stations seem to be popping up all over, causing co- channel interferace and all sorts of other problems aswell.
The worst thing ever allowed was Canwests Radio live/Radio pacific network to use the FM spectrum.. They should have aborted them to AM.

I would agree on FM Bandplans a total mess by the look of it now .
but I have heard there are some plans to ( fix ) some sites if thats at all possible with some services thatare a 100 or 200 Khz out to what they should be !!

I won't comment about radio live !!! it would have made more sense to
Swap RL and SG in Wellington around !! :D:D:D:D

Havent checked recently if Te Aroha is online or not.
Will make time tommorow and make some checks.

Will only be able to check with signal strength Meter too, as i dont have any
DVB T receiver yet.

Wil post my findings if any detected

Hi Shadownz.

Just checked using my Promax MC 360b.
Checking all three Freqs, shows there is activity coming off Te Aroha.
I cant confirm if there is Pics as i dont have DVBT receiver.

My last check a few weeks ago had no reading at all..

So looks to be all go !

Hi Guys.

Thought some might be interested.

A short time ago , after a few months with working with a supplier from Asia, I managed to receive my first Aftermarket Freeview DTT receiver.
The box while being very basic Sports component / Composite and HDMI Video outputs / Optical Digital Out, aswell as a USB port for Fimware upgrades and typical RF In/Loop out terminals.

From arrival, The Box was unpacked installed to watching Freeview pictures in around 2-3 mins.
Box has two installation options,, Auto or Manual. (Auto being the option i selected)
Selecting Auto, the Box scans the UHF band, and loads any found DVB-T services and lists them in the appropriate channel order.
No Editing or creating of favourites is required.

Testing of Optical Digital output resolves DD 5.1 (Canwest Tv3) Audio via Yamaha DSPA1 Processor.
Testing of 1080 Output via HDMI all good aswell. (At the Right Time Of Course)
Component i was unable to test, as dont have this connection available on Test display unit.

Gui is Clear and basic , but serves the purpose well.

On stripping the box down, shes a fairly lightweight box, comprising of a separate SMPS and Mainboard.
Running temp is reasonable, the Main CPU slightly warming the outside cover.

Suppliers are working on firmware upgrades, have allready received the second inside 2 weeks.

PVR Functionality is apprantly to me implemented very soon via USB mounted HDD.

Signal levels where i am vary accross the 3 freqs.. ranging from 35dbuV to 45dbuV.. So not the highest.
Aside from that, the box has no problems displaying any choosen services, without any evident breakup.. So quite stable.

See Pics Supplied..

What distance are you from TEA ?? are there any analogues at adjacent areas on the TEA digital channels ??:):)

Hi Kiwisteve

Distance from Te Aroha would be approx 300 - 350 Kms. (Possibly More)
Surrounding terrain is Hilly country, mainly landlocked where i am.

Analogues are there, variable from 65dbuv and below.
Most of the stuff down and around 500 Mhz are good.
The Furthur up i go, the weaker they get.

Have tried numberous types of Antenna's all with about the same results.
One thing i do notice, is Theres a Hot place for the Analogues, and a separate Hot place for the DTT signals.
So, in reality i should be installing separate UHF ants for each system.

Has anyone in North Taranaki been able to pick up DVB-T from Mt Te Aroha?

It was possible in the early 90's to pick up Sky UHF (using a 91 element UHF antenna on a high pole). There are a few UHF freqs that might interfer from North Egmont but once Sky UHF is turned off there won't be any conflict that i can see.

I was having a nosy on youtube last night and came across this:

Recorded in 1984, someone in Sydney picking up I assume the VHF channel 1 freq from Mt Te Aroha. Not sure if this is before or after they replaced the tower on the hill

The tower was replaced more like 1987 as it was being changed over as I left working there.

We used to get heaps of Aussie QSLs during the ducting season.

On the Sony TV I did a manual scan on the Kordia MUX the list of channels and software updates showed in the contents table, then I manually stored ( Reserved 6KSD ) into program 33 . The Orton non offical box found it on a AUTO Scan and loaded it .
Magic TV box and Zinwell would not find it even on manual
