An upgrade to the PlayStation 3 VidZone app will add more than 100 pre-programmed music channels
VidZone will this month add more than 100 music channels to its free PlayStation 3 music service, providing New Zealand PS3 owners with more access to music content.

In a joint statement released on Friday, Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and VidZone Digital Media said the new service, called VidZone TV, would provide consumers with access to pre-programmed music channels designed to suit all musical tastes. It would add to the existing VidZone music video on demand library, which now included more than 380 million music videos, SCE said.

VidZone Digital Media content and marketing director Louisa Jackson said the service was a “definitive example” of how IPTV should work.

“From tested favourites to taking a chance on something new, VidZone now has everything from Chart TV, world exclusives, premieres of music videos to artist interviews, behind the scenes and music sessions, all of which is free to the consumer.”

SCE said the launch of VidZone TV would coincide with improvements to VidZone’s search functions and a new-look main menu carousel. Other changes would include the ability to purchase games via the PlayStation store without exiting VidZone and a “video of the day” offer, available to users upon loading the VidZone application.

Meanwhile, SCE is continuing to hold back on announcing the New Zealand launch of PlayTV – a long awaited add-on that gives the PS3 the ability to act as a HD Freeview receiver. PlayTV was unveiled in Europe in late 2007 but is yet to reach Kiwi shores.
