Hi there

We are looking for some helpful advice on freeview satellite tv, such as satellite recievers and dish size.

We live in Whangarei, where HD is not available. We were considering getting a 90cm dish because of rainfade and our rural location, but were told that a 60cm dish would suffice. We also want to recieve SBS, so are not sure if the size of the dish would dictate what channels we recieve?

Our tv is 10 years old and is still going strong. It only has 2 video inputs, which are taken up by our video recorder and dvd player. We were considering getting the DishTV S9020DVD satellite reciever (http://www.dishtvsupport.co.nz/s9020dvd/) since it has a DVD, freeing up our DVD port on the tv. But today we were told that we should look at getting a HDMI satellie reciever, despite the fact that HD is not available in Whangarei. So, we thought about getting the DishTV S7050PVR HDMI Satellite Receiver (http://www.dishtvsupport.co.nz/s7050pvr/), but that means we would have to get rid of the video recorder - which records weeks and months in advance, on channels we are not watching.

We would really appreciate some help on what satellite reciever people recommend in the $200 bracket, as well as some advice on dish size.

Thank you :)

if you like sbs then a dish of 90cm or better still 1.2m as this signal is not as strong as freeview.
how can your vcr record months ahead when guides are only for up to 2 weeks?
if was starting again would get a 2 tuner sat pvr probably hd which are way more than 200.

A 90 should be plenty large enough, for some extra channels you could hang a 2nd lnbf on it for the optus D2 channels.

As for HDMI receivers i think you are getting confused. HDMI is a standard for digital video conection e.g a conector not the HD video format.

I doubt your 10 year old TV would have an HDMI conector on the back.

The lack of inputs can be fixed with a video switch from Dick Smiths or consider

Satellite receiver connected to AV1
DVD player connected to AV2
VCR for playback tune the set into the RF modulator output

otherwise you may also consider that some very cheap satellite receivers around, will record to USB hard drives or USB memory sticks.
