hi
I've seen some reports stating DTT sites available in NZ.
So I'm planning to buy the Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1100 Hybrid PCI TV Tuner.
I'd like some advice if anyone has any experience with this card and NZ DTT.
I have Windows and Linux at home, as long as I get this card to work in one of them, I'm happy!
If possible, please tell me what software/websites to look for, then I'll do abit of reading on how to set it up.
thanks in advance :)

Digital radio is fine
Analogue TV is fine
Thanks

I think this is a MPEG2 model DTT needs to be MPEG4 H264 with 8Mhz spacing
MPEG2 is an old standard , In NZ we have a system that is the envy of the western world ,try selling it to an ozzie or a pom

Actually most of these tuner units offload the video processing to the viewing software. If it can see the signal it should just be a matter of using the correct codecs.
Some experimentation may be required?

Yes I remember somewhere in the forum someone told me as long as you have MPEG4 software decoder, it should work.

Theres a few threads over at geekzone.co.nz in their forums about it. It would be nice to poach a few of their geeks over to the dtvforum.

you need a HE-AAC codec of some kind, usually stolen out of powerdvd but there are a few other alternatives, and for the H.264 codec try getting the coreavc version

No tv tuner maker supports mpeg4 avc with NZ's customizations at the moment.
(neither will Microsoft's Media Centre)
There is 3rd party software that will work 100% perfectly. These are:
Mediaportal (use 1.0) (opensource) guide on setting it up in NZ here -
http://cranznz.googlepages.com/
GB-PVR (opensource) (made by a kiwi)
DVBViewer (commercial)
You will need to get your hands on either PowerDVD 6/7 MPEG4 AVC codec or
the CoreAVC codec.
A good Google will get you these for free. (or you can purchase them)
Or you can use this trick - http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=84

To get the PowerDVD codec for free (with out any 'illegal' downloading)
Two other things - throw away any included antenna unless you live close
enough to a TV TXer to hear it hum. (any old UHF antenna will do no matter
how rusty - mine sits on the ground outside my window and gets perfect
reception here in Palmerstone North - even it I point it backwards, just
read the Zinwell thread to get an idea)
And you will need a grunty computer if you want to watch TV3's 1080p with
out any jerky or frame drops. (At least a fast Core 2 and a recent NVIDIA or
ATI graphics card). My latop with a 1.83 GHz Core 2 and a NVIDA 7300 Go,
bare;y handles it - jerks when there is a lot of movement / detail) all
running a custom Vista SP1 setup specifically tuned for TV.
I have a Lead DTV Dongle which I got for $90 from Ascent.co.nz (free
shipping) and enjoy TV3's HD shows! Can't wait for AC3 5.1 surround on my
gaming speakers!!!
Googling NZ for freeview on usb tv tuners returns lots of other similar
guides/success stories (especially with mediaportal)
