I noticed, as I was browsing the EPG the other night that "My name is earl" (Monday night, on C4) was listed as being in HD. Examining the freeview website's programming list, I also see it as being listed as being in HD there. So is "Harper's Island" which follows.

Does anyone know if C4 is switching from standard definition to high definition? Or do you suppose it's a typo in the guides?

i'd say it's a typo. a lot of c4's shows say they're available in dolby digital but they're not.
would be nice if they did go hd though, they're starting to have some alright shows on c4 now.

Had it confirmed by Freeview that it is just a typo. The information is provided by MediaWorks and they occasionally flag some C4 shows as HD as their original source material is HD.

For the moment there are no plans for C4 to broadcast in HD.

Pity they hadn't put the money into making C4 HD rather than wasting it on TV3+1

Have they got enough room on DVB-T to add C4 in HD?

MediaWorks have enough capacity for 2 HD channels and 2-3 SD channels. It is up to them how they use that capacity

The type of program material on C4 wouldn't justify the cost of HD :D:D

What a shame... :( C4 seems to be getting more and more shows that would have (in times gone by) been on TV3, so it would have been nice to get them in HD.

I do have to sympathise with C4 a bit. It's nice for us the end user to want HD content, but I would hate to be the people at C4 trying to convince canwest to make the investment. Its a pretty huge amount of money to spend, with not much chance of an increased return in the short to medium term.

Be nice to see C4 in HD (or much better qual) on Sky TV, watching the V8 Supercars when they switch from TV3 to C4 at 6pm, the qual diff is horrible!

I only just got a receiver that can view DVB-T yesterday, and I think that the sound quality on C4 is much better on DVB-S. Just my $0.02. Anyone else?

odd considering the source is not HD. Globecast uplink it via Optus D2 on an 8mb/s MPEG2 SD feed.

probably just the quality of studio equipment at C4

yeah but what I was meaning was Sky TV compresses the life out of C4 so it looks really awful, on TV3 HD it looks good (considering its an SD feed)

Yes I watched some SKY SD at a relatives place , and it looked washed out and lacking in detail :D:D everything with fast motion was all pixelated

I will stay with DVB T HD at least you get a decent picture there !!:D:D

And that's most likely one reason C4 will not go HD in the short term. It's not owned by a media company Canwest any more but an investment company called Ionbridge in ozz who sees Mediaworks in NZ as black or red ink..
