Anyone listen to this? TVNZ's Head of Television gets asked some questions about Sport Extra, and also about TVNZ's channels being on Sky. The section about TV is approximately from 3:30mins to 16:00mins.

Listened to it this morning. Talk about sidestepping the issues. Sky now seems to be the best thing since sliced bread with TVNZ..

Why oh why did the interviewer not bring up Prime in relation to the TVNZ6&7 handover to Sky? This would have made the interview complete.

One minute they are saying putting ch6 and ch7 on Sky would be a slow form suicide and then the next minute they say it was the plan all along. I'm also very disappointed that all the details of the commercial arrangement are so confidential that they can't say anything. If I remember rightly I own TVNZ like every other New Zealander and the only reason it would be so confidential is that they are afraid at how upset the public would be about the agreement. Why wasn't a reciprocal deal struck where Prime had to go to Freeview?
All this talk of partnering with TVNZ over sports coverage - it sounds like they have given up and have decided that they can't compete. Pathetic!
As for the coverage on the sports extra it has been lousy from day one. The Olympics coverage on the SE channel was the worst TV work I have ever seen. If the channel was put to use - heck even if they gave the air-time to some uni-students or an amature group to run when not broadcasting special sports events - it would have been a better use of the infrastructure.

I think I've just clicked as to why TVNZ didn't argue a reciprocal arrangement for Prime/TV6&7...
They don't actually want Prime on Freeview.
Think about it. Another network channel on Freeview could only further erode thier audience of the existing TVNZ channels. You'll notice TVworks have been very quiet on the issue too.
Ofcourse Freeview themselves (as separate to TVNZ & TVworks) would applaud Primes appearance.
That scenario seems very logical when TVNZ freely let all it's channels go to Sky. It actually makes sense to have Sky carry all thier programming, and not have any Sky (Prime) content on Freeview.
Maybe it should be TVNZ that should be hounded more than Sky after all?

Why didn't they insist on unencrypted HD streams?

herbie_g - I think you are right. I guess I'm a bit slow and it never crossed my mind. Hopefully Prime will feel the pressure to broadcast the 2010 winter games on Freeview and we will get it some time before then.

Wouldn't that be amazing. 4 HD feeds of TV One in order to do regional adverts.
