Hi Everyone,

I am after some advice on what is needed to get started in the world of Satellite TV. I am mostly interested in any Japanese channels. Can anyone give me any advice on what equipment I would require, what size dish etc. I live in Chrischurch city on the flat in the suburb of wainoni. I have clear views with no obstructions around me.

Also what sort of money would I be looking at to setup, is there any good used gear out there that would suit what I want to do?

Many Thanks
Bruce

The only Japanese channel available is NHK World on Optus D2

Ku band Free to Air

A typical setup for it would be a FTA receiver, some coax,a 76cm or larger KU band offset dish with LNBF. Pointed at Optus D2.

Hello,

Thanks for the info, any idea what a new and second hand setup would cost?

Thanks
Bruce

Hi Apsattv,

So would something like this FTA receiver

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/TVs/Satellite-receivers/auction-221226816.htm

and this dish

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/TVs/Satellite-receivers/auction-220895743.htm

And I would be in business to watch some Japanese TV?

Thanks
Bruce

I would not buy that FTA unit, its cheap for a reason. A lack of video outputs!

You should look for something with at minimum 2 sets of video outputs.

Try here?
http://www.jayx.co.nz/

65cm Dish with receiver etc $330 new. But check the receiver that it has at least 2 a.v outputs so you can record off it.

and let them know you want it for NHK, if you get a multiple D1/1/D2 feed you will get Freeview with it.

A 75-90cm dish with 2x LNBs is a good option. You can get Freeview on Optus D1 and NHK on Optus D2. In Chch you can try http://www.jacesolutions.co.nz/

Hi,

It might also be worth looking at FreeviewShop's packages, such as this one for D1 and D2 (http://www.freeviewshop.co.nz/optus-d1d2-package-p-397.html).

Yup, my first click on that site redirected to some malware website. Next click was fine. Next click was a 404 error. Then the next was back to normal. Hmmmm....

You could try this link http://www.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/faq/faq2_1.html and as mentioned NHK World on Optus D2 is in English, and repeated on Intelsat 8 C band with the premium (subscription) service in Japanese also available on the same satellite. A 3 mtr dish is necessary however.

It used to have a Jap soundtrack on the Intelsat 8 C band Feed but that seems to have gone now

you can get it in either English or Japanese off IS8 C band.

Looked into NHK premium last week. You need a special decoder AU$800 plus a subscription of AU$50 per month paid to NHK in Japan, plus the cost of installing a satellite dish!

NHK is FTA and in HD in either Japanese or English. Yes the Premium channel is pay (powervu encryption). Plenty of second hand c band dishes on trademe though. If you got a 3 meter mesh you will also get Aus network (get a friend in Japan to accept a Free Aus network card for you and sent it back to you) and BBC world. 3 good channels on this bird. (if you have mates in the right country you can get a Aus Network card that will unencrypt the Super 14 rugby so that should be a plus for you.

Does the HD service look good?

Its better than the SD in picture quality . I suspect alot of it is upscaled from SD but my HD Sat receiver does not like the 1080i / 60 it only likes 1080i/50 on ( 60 ) it seems to try and convert to 50 frames and a jerky image on high motion scences results
